Understanding Diabetic Nephropathy: A Silent Threat to Kidney Health


Diabetic nephropathy, often referred to as diabetic kidney disease, is a serious complication of diabetes that affects the kidneys’ ability to function properly. It develops gradually over time and can lead to chronic kidney disease or even kidney failure if left unmanaged. Despite its severity, the condition often progresses silently, making awareness and early detection essential.



At the core of diabetic nephropathy is prolonged high blood sugar. When glucose levels remain elevated for extended periods, it damages the tiny blood vessels in the kidneys responsible for filtering waste from the blood. This damage leads to a condition called glomerulosclerosis, where the filtering units of the kidneys, known as glomeruli, become scarred and less effective.
